I had to register a new company today and was interested to see that there’s quite a list of words that are sensitive, ie you’ve got to avoid them or get written permission from various bodies if you want to use them.

Some aren’t that surprising like Red Cross, Bank and Registered Radiographer

But there’s some strange ones there too.

Anzac, a new one to me, standing for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps which is restricted under Section 1 of the Anzac Act 1916.

Manchester University has quite a few entries, which are covered by the “University of Manchester Act 2004″.

If you want to use King, Queen or Duke, you’ll have to get a written letter of non-objection must be obtained from the Lord Chancellor’s Department, Constitutional Policy Division.

More confusing are phrases like “Design right,” where you’re encouraged to get advice from Companies House where the name will not be registered if it unjustifiably implies a connection with HM Government or a local authority. What? Why? Eh?
