Web 2.0 - Failing Elegantly
16th March 2006 by Simon
One of the not-often mentioned advantages of Web 2.0 interfaces - done well - is the capture of problems and errors before submitting the form, and the data potentially getting lost.
A great example of this Gmail (of course). When after typing in your heart-felt email you click the Send button, it appears that the Web 2.0 part of it goes off to submit the data in the form. If it can’t successfully blat the data to the server, it displayed a “Having trouble message’, elegantly handing you back to the form without loss of information. As you’ll be painfully aware, normal form submission is a real hit and miss (your data) affair.
It’s another improvement to the interface bringing confidence to the user - protecting them from the feeling that they’re broken it.
