Viewing faxes on XP
19th December 2003 by Simon
I’ve been using a fax to email service run by DM Club for a number of year. On the odd occasion that some _has_ to send me a fax, it enables me to receive faxes where ever I am, straight to my inbox as a DCX graphic. It functions well.
Luckily I don’t get too many faxes these days, so infrequently in fact that I haven’t had one since upgrading to XP back in August this year. When one dropped in to my mail box recently, I found that the viewing DCX format is no longer supported by the XP.
I had a look around to see what could be used instead, and after a brief review I found Irfan View, which is free for non-commercial use.
The number of graphic formats that it covers is hugely comprehensive
AIF¹, ANI, AU¹, AVI, B3D, BMP, CAM, CLP, CPT, CRW, CUR, DAT¹, DCM/ACR, DCX, DIB, DJVU, DLL/EXE, ECW, EMF, EPS, FLI/FLC², FPX, FSH, G3, GIF, ICL, ICO, IFF/LBM, IMG, JP2, JPG/JPEG, KDC, LDF, LWF, Mac PICT², MED, MID, MNG/JNG, MOV¹², MP3, MPG/MPEG¹, MrSID, NLM/NOL/NGG/NSL/OTB/GSM, OGG, PBM, PCX, PGM, PhotoCD, PNG, PPM, PSD, PSP, QTIF², RAS/SUN, RealAudio, RAW, RLE, RMI, SFF, SFW, SGI/RGB, MrSID, SWF, SND¹, TGA, TIFF/TIF, TTF, TXT, WAD, WAV, WBMP, WBZ/WBC, WMF, WMA, WMV, XBM, XPM, (NEF, ORF, RAF, MRW, DCR).Having looked through its list of functions, just using for viewing faxes is frankly insulting to it - it looks like it could actually replace any graphics viewer. As an example, it has a slide-show facility that also enables you to build a executable file or burn a CD to give to people.
All in all, well worth a look.
