UK ID card lies

The UK government keeps trying to introduce ID cards in the UK and most people don’t really want them. To try and get some feedback for the idea, the government opened a public consultation process. The results were reported on 28 April 2003 by Beverley Hughes, Minister for Citizenship and Immigration in the Houses of Parliament, when she stated “The responses have been about 2:1 in favour of introducing a scheme” - ie. the public wanted ID cards.

It’s now come to light that the true results were over 70% of the responses were against the introduction of ID cards. The government claim the mistake was caused by all of the 5,000 votes from the Stand website were counted as a single vote.

Sadly this appears to be yet another example of the government twisting statistics, or dare I say laying, to suit the ideas they want to promote. It’s getting to the point where the default response is to disbelieve what they are told by the government.
