Trouble at Mill - BBC Technology could take strike action
12th July 2004 by Simon
Following the announcement last week from BBC Technology (BBCT) about Siemens being their preferred bidder, ie the one they want to purchase them, the union BECTU has carried out a ballot. 207 of the voting BECTU members said they were in favour of strike action against 40 who said no - giving 83.8% voting in favour.
The major stumbling blocks are on a comparable pension and on compulsory redundancies. BECTU are looking for a three year guarantee of co compulsory redundancies, but BBC Technology/Siemens are offering one year.
If the strike goes ahead, it could prove very embarrassing both for the BBC and the UK Government, in the form of Department of Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS). The DCMS need to give their explicit permission for the sale to go ahead.
Speaking to people within BBCT, many feel it is highly likely that the strike will go ahead, but accept that the changes are inevitable.
