Swedish time translation
25th October 2005 by Simon
Anders & Christina, friends from Stockholm dropped over a couple of weekend ago. It was lovely to see them but one strange thing arose from the conversations was that the convention of telling time in England and Sweden are remarkably/alarmingly different.
Swedish say Half nine
To English ears: 9:30
To Swedish ears: 8:30
The Swedes mean half nine as in not fully nine, or half to nine - not half past as the English do.
Bear it in mind when making arrangements in the future.
Now if you want to get really complex … Swedes also say things like Five after, half nine - which is, of course, 25 to nine!
