Pop Idol generates 690m phone votes
25th April 2004 by Simon
I went to an excellent Royal Television Society (RTS) London centre event last week organised by Margot Green. It covered the means of raising finance for TV productions and in particular advertiser funded programming or AFP in TV biz speak.
When one of the speakers, Natalie Tydeman from Freemantle, was introducing her company she touched on the worldwide success of Pop Idol. I was stunned to hear that since its inception in 2001, Pop Idol has generated over 690 million premium rate telephone calls with people voting for their fave Idol. Not surprisingly it’s earned them the Guinness world record, and I would suspect considerable revenues both for them and the local telephone companies.
