Jim’ll Fix It - 30th Anniversary, 15 May 2005

I don’t know how I missed this. 15th May was the 30th anniversary of the first episode of Jim’ll Fix It, a TV show that was must-see TV in my youth.

Member of the public would write in, explaining their dream day. Jimmy Savile would sit in his huge hi-tech chair, grant their wish and after we’d all delighted in watching the event, chat to them and award them their own ‘Jim fixed it for me’ badge.

The chair was a wonder of the modern era, or so it appeared, simply by pressing a button on top of one of the arm rests, the chair would make pot of tea, sliding out on a tray of the front of said arm rest (assisted by the show’s runner I suspect).

Nearly every child in the UK dreamt of being on the show. This made it all the more amazing that on a visit to a primary school friends house (Alex Kramer I think), I saw his sister’s ‘Jim fixed it for me’ badge chucked carelessly in a draw.

I was stunned - how could she not have valued it? I was sure that I’d have at least framed the gold-painted medallion, and worn it on very special occasions.

It was a pivotal point for me - understanding that some people valued (or de-valued) things differently.

Schmap - Photo Inclusion">I was contacted through Fickr to see if I would agree to have a photo I took in Hanover, Germany included in a tour guide (it was under a creative commons license) - the Schmap Hanover Guide. Slightly flattered I agreed. It’s now been confirmed that the image is to be used in the electronic guide. Interestingly I’m blogging it, giving them Google juice.
