ID card scheme derailed by Lords
16th January 2006 by Simon
Fantastic - The LibDems and Conservatives have joined together to vote against the ID card scheme in the House of Lords. The vote - 237 against, 156 for.
They want the government to provide a detailed breakdown of the costs involved and clearly explain its benefits. While the government states the costs yearly costs will be around £500m/year, it is thought that the cost of integration with other computer systems will be an additional £2Bn/year.
There’s two more debates to go, focusing on the wording of the bill. Fingers crossed for a similar gust of sense.
