Lighting rope - upper landing

Originally uploaded by Simon.

Having been in our new house for about four months, we’ve moved from the position of thinking that we know what we wanted to do with it, through the realisation that we didn’t really understand; returning to the point where we are now - starting to realise what we might be able to do with it.

We’re relieved that the terrible wet-rot that the damp proofing company were keen to tell us about, appears to be significantly less-alarming than their report shouted. Strange that.

Friday was the first day I’d been able to spend time in the house, alone and not needing to work. It was quite glorious and got my brain working on how the house might be.

We’re very lucking in having a lot of space available to us, but even with that space, we want to make best use of it. The overview on our current thinking - is to have the ground floor divided into two sections - casual, everyday use and a more formal part, playing to the buildings splendor.

A small part of my thinking was about new forms for lighting. Every now and then Dave Galbraith and I chat about the use of LED lighting. It struck me that we should look at that for this house.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a light rope and we’ve been playing round with it as an alternative to ‘normal’ lighting. We’ve used it around the top floor landing and currently it’s lighting the stairs.

Wandering around the house on Friday, I thought that something like the rope light could be used in parts of the house. By running the lighting rope along the corners at the top and bottom of the walls. Their brightness could be adjusted independently to provide different lighting effects.

eg In the evening - the upper lights bright and the lower dull, gives the feeling of up-lighters. During the day, if lighting was required, the lower lights become brighter.

Now I’m on a search for a supplier for the rope lighting. One I’ve found so far is Skytronic and their offering that is available in 45m reels. I’m certain that there’s a number of factories in China knocking out similar types of things of this 24 hours a day. If you know of keenly prices suppliers, I’d be really interesting in hearing.
