Happy New Year, etc
2nd January 2006 by Simon
A very happy New Year to all.
Xmas (as I’m currently insisting on calling it, much to Sal’s annoyance) was an enjoyable blur of relatives visiting, preempted by a large degree of house reorganisation to make their stays as pleasant as possible.
Alpha had a great time being buried in gifts. A joy to see her innocent enjoyment of the whole event. I did a few audio recordings of her talking about Santa Claus so we can, in years to come, reflect on it.
A few days before New Year saw the arrival of Steve, Bren and Felix PK. Sal did a storming job of providing great, hearty food for the first couple of days, which was followed by _stunning_ food over the next few days provided by Steve and Bren.
The capping meal had to be New Years Eve which took over four hours to prepare. I’m not talking four hours mucking around, but flat-out, hard work.
The results was stunning.
The main, Beef Wellington, a dish that hasn’t previously appealed to me, as the idea the pastry around the beef sounded a bit horrid.
Even for someone as experienced as Steve, the dish is a bit of a gamble as you can’t tell if the beef is properly cooked - given it’s wrapped in the puff pastry.
Skill, judgement and the the spirit of NYE lead to it being a perfect pink-centred delight.
The wines to go with it were also a delight, including Mead - another first for me. Perks of Ventnor supplied most of the wine, and I’d recommend them to anyone.
Robert from down the road turned up at 10:30 - very punk I thought given it was originally going to be at 7:30. He was very welcome and entertaining as ever.
The cheeses at the end included a blue cheese which, after years of being repulsed by it, I’ve finally discovered is most tasty.
The following days saw duck, pork and more.
The perfect goodbye to 2005 and embrace of 2006.
