FlyBe charges extra for baggage and more - Beware
10th May 2006 by Simon
The world is becoming dafter everyday. I recently booked a flight on FlyBe to Edinburgh for the W3C conference. I know it’s a low cost airline, but this is really silly.
I looked up the flight price, chose what fitted best for me and was the best value. I was going to be flying from Southampton, a little used airport, so the flights were about £42 each way.
Then on to the next step and I was hit with an additional fee, Airport Departure Tax, Passenger Service Charge, a Security/Insurance & Fuel surcharge, ie anything and everything else that they thought they could think of/try to justify.
That added 50% to the flights.
Taking a deep breath (of annoyance) I pressed on. Then what?
They wanted me to pay for the bag I wanted to put in the hold! I had to specify how many bags I wanted to put in the hold for the outgoing and return journey How do you justify that? I’ll let them explain.
Flybe have made the ultimate commitment in pricing transparency meaning you only pay for what you need. We let you take a whopping 10Kg of hand baggage on your flight to speed your journey through the airport. Any additional baggage needs to be checked into the hold at a cost of GBP2.50 per bag per sector. For this charge each person can take up to 25Kg in total, if the bag weighs more than this you will incur an excess baggage charge at the airport. To take advantage of the GBP2.50 per bag charge you must pre-book your bags NOW using the drop-down selection boxes below.
Don’t worry if you don’t pre-book your bags in advance. You can still pay for them at the airport at a cost of GBP5.00 per bag per sector.
I was then asked if I wanted to reserve a seat for only £5 extra or £15 for a seat with extra leg room - previously known as the emergency exit, where you have to agree to take responsibility in the case of an emergency - now you have to pay extra for the privilege?
What a joke. There was no notice of this ridiculous trickery at the outset of the starting to book the flight. Beware.
I won’t be surprised to hear that there is a second buttock surcharge if you want to take the option of using both of your buttocks when you’re on the flight.
