Escalators and Germany: Different Nations, Different Norms
7th September 2006 by Simon
Just back from Berlin. One difference I noticed, Germans (and possibly other nations) do not walk on escalators.
In the UK the norm is if you want to stand still, you stand on the right hand side. If you’re walking, up or down, you do it on the left.
Most trade fairs are a pretty big rush, as you pick up stories and want to get them out before the next event starts. Going up and down to the press centre, which was up on the third floor, I got quite a lot of confused looks by those standing in what is seen as the fast lane in the UK, as I “Excuse’d” my way up and down.
