ZippoTricks disappears, archive.org fascinates
28th August 2003 by Simon
The Magical Singing Chef left me a comment on a posting about Zippo Tricks that I had made a little over a year ago. I went over to ZippoTricks.com and was shocked to see that ZippoTricks has had to remove its content after “tremendous scrutiny from various US groups, organizations and even political figures concerning the potential dangers involved with tricking.” What a crying shame - I know it had been very popular (I’ve had loads of hits on my page which just referred people to the site) and had built up a huge knowledge base of descriptions, images and videos.
The Magical Singing Chef asked if anyone had the HTML of the pages, I assume he’s still keen to learn how to do tricks on his Zippo. Well there is a couple of routes for getting to content that’s been removed from the Internet - either searching on Google and then looking at the cached document, or by using the far more interesting and deep method - archive.org.
Archive.org was previously known as the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and has snapshots of the Web going back to 1996, comprising of over 100 terabytes of data. It’s absolutely fascinating and you’ll loose hours looking back at how site layouts have changed, who has changed their blogs retrospectively, remembering long gone Web companies, the list runs on.
Sadly neither of these methods leads to you being able to see the all important images or videos on the ZippoTricks.com site as the images and video that the archived pages point to are on the original site, so if they’ve been removed your not going ot get to see them.

If anyone comes up with a new source for zippo tricks or some of the old pages, please send them my way. after the advertisiment in this months playboy, i decided to buy my boss a personalized zippo and attach the link to zippotricks.com. after he recieved the gift he went to check it out and the site was gone. it’s not the same trying to explain what was there.

I don’t know what dick head would want to shut down a site like zippotricks.com, I mean if some one hurts their self, it’s their own motherflucking fault! I mean, hey, I may well burn my house down, hurt myself, trying to do something like a zippo trick, but I beleive I am solely responsible. Hello pete, if someone said jump of damned cliff and you did it, common (although obviously not so common anymore…) sense would tell you who’s the dumbass!
Fuck Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schummer, Rosie O’Donnel and all those other bum-fucks who don’t know grits from shoe polish…
fei lei could u start a site on geocities or something and put all your saved files from zippotricks on it. that way u could get em all back into circulation thanks if u cant email em to me

fei lei you should reali think about starting a website with all the tricks on it. if you cannt be bothered, send me everything, and i will get it up on the web again for public consumption.
Fei Lei…I’m sure that you are getting tired of requests for the videos but if there is any way that you could send me any of your files I would really appreciate it. If anyone else has the videos and could send them to me that would also be great.
The founder of zippotricks.com just launched lightertricks.com. It is password protected for the time being, but here’s the info you need:
user: feedme
pass: tricks
enjoy!
why dosnt the site load
its like its stuck \
steam: how do we get in with that password?
Looks like they started the IP blocking of the US and Europe. Anyone in the US found a good way to get around it, like with an anonymous web surfing program or something?
HOW TO GET PAST THE IP BLOCKAGE!!!!!
The IP block in just a temp. thing. It sucks, but it is neccessary for the time being.
If you are blocked, I suggest you mail the founder of lightertricks.com (and the late zippotricks.com). Perhaps he can help you out.

Also, to bypass it you can do the following.
Internet Explorer 5.xx: Tools | Internet Options… | Connections. Select either dial-up connection or LAN (depending on how you connect to the Internet), press Settings. Check the “Use Proxy Server” box– enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.
Note: You must also uncheck the “Use HTTP 1.1″ and “Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections” checkboxes in the Advanced tab of Internet Options dialog box.
Netscape 4.xx: you first have to go through Edit | Preferences. Then in the frame on the left, click on the box with plus sign in it next to Advanced, then select Proxies from under Advanced. Select “Manual proxy configuration” on the right side of the dialog box and click the button labeled “View…” next to it. Enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.
Internet Explorer 4.xx: View | Internet Options | Connection tab | “Access Internet using a proxy server” box | Advanced or Settings — enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.
Internet Explorer 3.xx: View | Options | Connections tab | Connect through proxy server box | Settings — enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.
Internet Explorer 2.xx: View | Options | Proxy — enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.
Netscape 3.xx, 2.xx: Options | Network Preferences | Proxies | Manual Proxy Configuration | View — enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK, click on the next OK.With Netscape 2.0, follow with Options | Save Options.
Windows NT with Internet Explorer: Control Panel -> Internet | Advanced | Proxy.
Opera: Preferences | Proxy servers — check the box next to HTTP, enter proxy address (127.0.0.1) and port (8088), click OK.
ATTENTION! The ip address used in this example is purely an example.
Obviously you need a fresh and up to date IP address. Go to this site to get it:
http://www.atomintersoft.com/products/alive-proxy/proxy-list/
The ip address of the proxy server needs to be updated on a regular basis.

You can visit the site even from within the US or EU using the proxy thingy STEAM was kind enough to explain. I found that in Mozilla the direct link works without getting a block. I haven’t tested this thoroughly tho so no guarantees but here goes:
