I run a rescue center and we currently have two monkeys available for adoption. Keep in mind these are rescues so they need lots of love and a very understanding person to love them. 1 male capuchin and 1 snow macaque. Please visit our web site or e-mial for mor information. I have wanted a Monkey for so long not as much for a pet as a family member. Monkeys need atention just as a baby does and I would be there to cheer on the Monkey and care for it. I am aware of the things I will have to give up and the things I would need to get I use to have a monkey his name was Champ and he was really old we saved him he had a broken arm but he had a baby with him the baby was week and not able to stay alive but we cared for it the best we could if you are giving a monkey away for good cause you should contact me I might be 16 but I work with an exotic animal hospital and I could help a monkey that might not be able to climb or something. Hi, I am saddened by most posts on this site. Please tell me how those wishing for a very cheap monkey or a free one because they state that they are “poor” will plan on paying for the 100.00 a month that it costs to feed the monkey or the 80.00 a month for other supplies or the 200.00 a month required for shots and visits to the vet? I am not being harsh, I just hope you will consider your options and that if you truly love monkeys, then visit them at the zoo or try to find a resource where you can have contact but not the tremendous responsibility that is required in owning one. If you can’t afford to purchase one then the odds are extremely large that you will be unable to afford their lifetime of needs.

Erm. Guys! Monkeys don’t make good pets. They are expensive to look after and they bite a lot. They live to about 40 years old. The thought of a pet monkey is cool I know, but you have to think about their welfare too.

Hi I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a rescue organization that does monkey recue, or someone that I could talk to about the smaller monkey breeds as I work for an animal shelter with an on site vet and would like to get this contact for our shelter. I myself have owned these wonderful animals in the past and I agree with those of you that say it is very expensive as it is. they have many shots that they need and specialised diet. it is not like owning a cat or a dog. think before you get one.. and it is not a pet for the casual owner. also NO person under 21 needs to have this pet and some even over that age dont need this pet… as they just end up in the rescues and the shelters. anyway that is my soap box.. anyone that can help me out with the info I need for my contacts list at the shelter would be very wonderful. please email me .

i am a wildlife biologist and just so you know the worst thing for a child is a monkey even with there k-9’s out (which is very cruel) they will bite and you will need stiches at least 5 to 10 times while you own this primate, i have worked with them for 4 years and have been bitten 23 times, and all i do is feed them, this monkeys are tame and sometimes let me hold them but they are also very independent and dont understand the word no, if you cant afford an extra 25,000 plus a year, then dont even try to get one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Primates are wild animals with complex social needs and do not make suitable pets. All monkeys suffer mentally and physically from being kept in captivity, isolated from others of their own kind.

I guess all the people complaining about not having any money hasnt read the emails regarding the cost and upkeep of monkeys. Either that or they are just being selfish. It seems that lots of people are looking for “cheap” monkeys because maybe since they are poor the monkeys wont need any food.

I’ve been amazed to see the number of comments posted on this, what I thought was a throwaway post. Clearly there’s lots of people who are interested in having a pet monkey.

John’s impassioned plea spurred me to write. What he says may make sense (except for the “allowing gay people” and monkeys as pets part) - I don’t know for sure - but he says nothing about the requirement for accommodation that you require to have them live a fulfilled life.

Janice Patchen raises some interesting points - at the monthly maintenance costs she lists, it reads more like a mortgage and if some of them do live to 40 as adam says - that is a serious commitment.

I am concerned by the number of posts from people wanting monkeys for as little as $100. I also question whether they could afford to maintain the monkey properly without impacting their standard of life.

Years back I really wanted to have a monkey and I visited the local pet shop in Camden’s Parkway. I admit walking past the window a number of times had influenced me, and I thought it would be a great idea, giving very little consideration to the ramifications. Luckily I ended leaving with a tank of terrapins (that ended up getting severely chomped by the evil ‘pin in their midsts - another story).

If I had left with it, the poor thing really wouldn’t have had a good life. I was living in a flat in Camden, that was often empty for extended periods. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to spend all day with them - and with them being so bright, it would have got bored and I would, quite swiftly, I imagine become miserable.

I’m generally pleased by the posts but the ones I don’t really feel comfortable with post that are the offering of supplying monkeys. Please don’t post any more. With this in mind I’ve removed one from John Walton, where he was offering African Origin monkeys - traveling from their home to another country, by who knows what means.

Please post on. It would be particularly interesting to hear from other people who actually live with a monkey on a daily basis. How has the reality compared with how you had imagined it?

I have a little girl names kiwi (capuchin) she is 3 and to let you know no one will give you a monkey for CHEAP. when I got kiwi she was 4,000$$$ and that is “cheap” for any monkey.They are expensive to look after. and they bite a lot. Does anybody have any of those sea-monkeys? You know, those things that you put in a fish tank and they grow a little, you know, how if you stick your head in there they get in your eyes and you have to run to the bathroom to rinse them out?? They are monkeys aren’t they?

I also agree that British people cant spell, and they need to stop criticising us Americans just because some of us have money. Just because our teeth dont smell and look all yellow and gangly, and we’re not all soccer holligans and stuff, they think our country is flawed, and they go to any stupid web site and say stupid stuff because they are two scared to say it to our face.

I have a seven-foot-tall half monkey/half man and I want to sell it for a generous $2,000 give or take a little bit. It isn’t a very good household pet, but you can keep it outside. You have to make sure you keep it behind an electrified barbed-wire fence that is at least 18 feet high. You can’t have it around babies, or humans under 5′6″, because it has a voracious appetite. It is hard to breed these creatures and you need to make sure the government doesn’t hear about it.

I recently found an abandoned small albino pygmy chimp/squirrel monkey on the side of the road near my house. It must have been a pet before, because it’s pretty obedient. It is really nice and makes a great companion. I would keep it, but my job as a traveling Thai dancer would leave me no time to care for it. So I am willing to sell it for a starting price of $52.73.
