CeBIT - rather large
10th March 2005 by Simon
I’m currently at CeBIT, the scale of which I didn’t really grasp, despite being told it was big by many of the journalists that I spoken to about it before leaving.
I thought IBC was a big event, as it is hosted in 11 halls. 11 halls? Pah, that is nothing. CeBIT is 27 halls, scrub that, they’re more like aircraft hangers. The sensible have brought bikes or scooters to get around.
The press centre is a pretty impressive size. Three floors of hacks, predominantly German, bashing out words. The wireless network that work on the pre-event press day has buckled under the weight of connections, so now there’s a bun fight for Ethernet drop cables, as people desperately try to file stories.
I used to carry a drop cable, but since WiFi I’d given up the practice. Post this trip I can see that being reversed.
I hope to get see some of Hannover on Saturday, besides the view I’d had passing through on a tram. Then to Berlin and home on Sunday evening. I must be getting old as I’m really looking forward to get home.
