Audience participation is key
23rd September 2004 by Simon
Last night I was on a panel with Simon Fell (Controller emerging technologies, ITV) and Peter Weitzel (Manager broadcast technology developments, BBC Technology) at the Royal Television Society (RTS) review of IBC2004 event, chaired by journalist, Nick Radlo.
It was one of those rewarding event where everyone involved learns from each other. The panellists learnt from each other, the audience from the panel and the panel from the audience.
It is my strong belief that in these days of convergence, where knowledge, skills and industries are working closely together, that active involvement with, and of, the audience is essential for the most rewarding events. The days where the ‘chosen’ of the panel instruct/deliver/pontificate to the audience are over. It is more likely than not that many in the audience have as much, if not more, knowledge on certain areas than those on the panel.
Events that stick with the old format of stage-to-audience delivery will wither and die.
BTW - The brief recap on the important areas of IBC04 - the two notable extremes of resolution, High Definition TV (HDTV) and video broadcasts to handhelds using DVB-H.
